A registry identification card is a card given out by the North Dakota Division of Medical Marijuana. This card shows that someone is officially registered as a qualifying patient or designated caregiver.

How long is a registry identification card valid?

A North Dakota registry identification card is valid for one year unless specified otherwise by a healthcare provider on the written certification.

Can another state’s medical marijuana cards be used in North Dakota?

No, only North Dakota registered cards can be used at North Dakota dispensaries.

As a patient, how do I know if I qualify to apply for a registry identification card to participate as a qualifying patient in the medical marijuana program?
  • Your healthcare provider has confirmed they will provide a written certification via the application process.
  • You pay a nonrefundable $25 application fee.
  • You have a qualifying debilitating medical condition as outlined in the following question.
  • You have an original written certification from your healthcare provider.
  • You have a bona fide provider-patient relationship.
  • You submit all necessary information required by the North Dakota Division of Medical Marijuana.

  • Agitation of Alzheimer’s Disease or related Dementia
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Glaucoma
  • Epilepsy
  • Anorexia Nervosa
  • Bulimia Nervosa
  • Anxiety Disorder
  • Tourette Syndrome
  • Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
  • Endometriosis
  • Interstitial Cystitis
  • Neuropathy
  • Migraine
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder

  • Spinal Stenosis or chronic back pain, including Neuropathy or damage to the nervous tissue of the spinal cord with objective neurological indication of Intractable Spasticity
  • A chronic or debilitating disease or medical condition or treatment for such disease or medical condition that produces one or more of the following:
    • Cachexia or Wasting Syndrome
    • Severe debilitating pain that has not responded to previously prescribed medication or surgical measures for more than three months or for which other treatment options produced serious side effects
    • Intractable Nausea
    • Seizures
    • Severe and persistent muscle spasms, including those characteristic of Multiple Sclerosis
Who is considered a healthcare provider?

A healthcare provider is: 

  • A physician licensed by the North Dakota Board of Medicine.
  • An advanced practice registered nurse licensed by the North Dakota Board of Nursing.
  • A physician assistant licensed by the North Dakota Board of Medicine.
Can a patient under the age of 19 years apply for a registry identification card and participate in the medical marijuana program?

Although a patient under 19 is considered a minor, a parent or legal guardian can submit an application on their behalf. A registered designated caregiver also has to purchase marijuana on the minor’s behalf and assist in the use of marijuana. A registered designated caregiver can be a parent, guardian, or other individual.

Do minors participating in the medical marijuana program have any restrictions, limitations, or discounts on products?
  • Yes – A patient who is a minor is not eligible to use any dried leaves and flowers or any product with a THC concentration greater than six percent (6%).
  • Pediatric patients are offered a 75% discount on all qualifying products at all Pure Dakota Health locations.
How much usable marijuana can a registered qualifying patient or registered designated caregiver purchase in a 30-day period?

Patients and designated caregivers are limited in how much medical marijuana they can purchase in a rolling 30-day period, as outlined below.

  • Up to 2.5 ounces* dried leaves and flower
  • Up to 6000 mg THC total of other products
  • Possession Limit – 3oz flower at one time
  • Minors cannot have dried leaves and flowers or have any product with >6% THC
What are compassion centers?

A compassion center refers to either a manufacturing facility (grower/producer) or a dispensary (retail store).
